It’s Not Just Sony, These Major Gaming Companies Have Also Dropped E3

  • Sony confirms that it will not be attending E3 2020.
  • Some has suggested that this could be the end of E3.
  • Sony is one of several gaming companies that have dropped out of the event.

After Sony confirmed that it will not be attending E3 2020, a popular suggestion on social media was that this was the end of E3. Microsoft will be at E3 2020, likely sharing more about the Xbox Series X. But it may not be able to carry the whole event on its shoulders.

Sony isn’t the only major gaming company that has chosen to skip E3. That’s why so many people are wondering whether there is room for the event. E3 seems like a very expensive tradition compared to the way that gaming companies have started to reveal games. Developers are now much more concerned about getting their games played by streamers and fans to post messages on social media. An announcement stream also costs less money.

Another company that has thought this way is EA, which develops and publishes series such as Madden NFL and Battlefield. The company does hold EA Play events just before E3, but these aren’t held in the same hall as the main E3. At these events, fans of EA games can play newly announced games as well as meet professional athletes, popular streamers, and celebrities.

World of Tanks developer Wargaming stopped holding E3 events in 2016. Disney Interactive also stopped attending in 2016. Games like Call of Duty have just asked for a spot in the PlayStation E3 event for years as it’s cheaper.

Blizzard Entertainment has held its BlizzCon event every year since 2005. This allows it to make announcements about new games, hold competitions, and meet fans at one time. It can plan things its way. This does cost a huge amount of money, but this sort of fan event is what Sony and so many other gaming companies are looking for.
