France Won’t Tax Crypto-Only Trades, Will Tax Crypto-to-Fiat Sales
French economy minister Bruno Le Maire said on Sept. 12 that French authorities won’t tax crypto-to-crypto trades, but will tax when cryptocurrencies are sold for fiat currency.
Bloomberg Tax reported on Le Maire’s declarations on Sept. 12. Per the report he noted:
“We believe that the moment the gains are converted into traditional money is the right time to assess tax.”
Easier transaction tracking
The author of the report also explains that such an approach to taxing cryptocurrency trading would help with tracking transactions, which he believes to be a common challenge in crypto-to-crypto trading. Le Maire also reportedly addressed Value-Added Tax (VAT) application to cryptocurrencies.
More precisely, he explained that VAT is to be applied to cryptocurrency transactions only when they are used to acquire an asset or a service. France is reportedly already implementing the new approach to cryptocurrency taxation.
Meanwhile, in Portugal
As Cointelegraph reported at the end of August, Portugal’s Tax Authority has clarified that both cryptocurrency trading and payments in crypto will not be taxed in the country.
Also in August, a tax bill seeking to allow the exclusion of gain or loss on like-kind exchanges of virtual currency has been introduced in the United States House of Representatives.

Chinese Bitcoin (BTC) mining giant Canaan Creative’s depositary shares have seen a 40 percent drop in value since November initial public offering (IPO). However, the mining giant’s stock has taken a severe beating since its IPO on Nov. 21. The company’s stock price value went as high as $13 per share on the day of the launch, only to take a painful nosedive to today’s value of $5.25, representing a 40% price crash. After failing to secure an IPO in Hong Kong last year, Canaan looked to the United States, hoping to raise $400 million. However, the company was only able to raise $90 million, less than 25% of their planned amount. Canaan endured a setback when it became clear that its biggest backer, Credit Suisse, decided to pull out a week before the IPO. According to people familiar with the matter, Credit Suisse was concerned whether the offering could secure sufficient orders. Canaan’s competitor also files for…Dec 14, 2019
There is a class action lawsuit filed against Ripple in 2018 by investors who are alleging that XRP is a security. Even if the suit is dismissed, it is unlikely to have any major effect on the cryptocurrency. Why it won’t affect XRP in a large way Ripple the company has long distanced itself from XRP the cryptocurrency. The fintech firm has said that XRP is merely a cryptocurrency utilized by various blockchain-based solutions. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse said that holders of XRP are not provided with equity in the company and the cryptocurrency exists independent of Ripple through an open source code. For this specific class action, Ripple’s legal team focused on the timing of the suit. It argued that investors filed the lawsuit after a significant time has been passed since the investment. The XRP price is up 11 percent against the USD in the past week (Source: TradingView.com) On the legality of XRP, Ripple was relatively cautious in bringing about the subject and instead chose to concentrate on the timing of the suit rather than how it…Jan 16, 2020

The SIM Swapping Saga Continues In the post, the user explains how he was targeted, yet seemingly managed to not lose any funds in the process. Bitcoin-cautious Germany has seen its first bank demand that ordinary savers pay it to hold their money — even as little as €1. According to multiple local press outlets including the Süddeutsche Zeitung on Nov. 19, the Volksbank Raiffeisenbank Fürstenfeldbruck (VRF) in Northern Bavaria is now charging 0.5% negative interest rates on the smallest deposits. Bank on negative interest rates: “We had to” “We had to do it,” the publication quoted the bank’s management as saying. The reason, they said, was the cost of “parking” money at the European Central Bank (ECB). In Germany, negative interest rates previously impacted only deposits above €100,000, which constituted an interest-free allowance. VRF’s move makes it the first lender in the country to target savings below that level. “Recently, more clients have been coming to us from other banks where they’ve already used up their allowance,” the management continued. Germany could “open floodgates” for banks As Cointelegraph reported, negative interest rates are beginning to form part of the ECB’s monetary policy. The phenomenon ultimately means that some portion of savers must pay banks to…Nov 21, 2019
