Twitter Facebook reddit Pinterest Hacker News LinkedIn Tumblr Google+ VKontakte There is a direct relationship between Bitcoin hash rate and price. The former follows the latter. If BTC prices fall, odds are Bitcoin miners will switch off their rigs. That means a drop in the network’s hash rate. Hash rate, a measure of how fast a mining rig can calculate and solve SHA-256 hash functions, is a key metric in Bitcoin and other Proof of Work consensus algorithm protocols. Cost of 51% Attacks The lower the hash rate, the more susceptible the network is. When push comes to shove, external elements can launch a dreaded Majority Attack. Researchers have published a new report on what they deem to be a “relentless” crypto mining botnet that lurks behind seemingly innocuous content such as JPEG images of Taylor Swift. The botnet — best known as MyKings (alternatively as DarkCloud or Smominru) — has been active since 2016, according to a Dec. 18 news release from Gabor Szappanos at SophosLabs. While all “underpatched, low-hanging fruit” on the internet — to use Sophos’ phrasing — has long been vulnerable to its attacks, recently the actors behind MyKings have allegedly added bootkit functionality, which makes it all the more resistant to detection and effective removal. $3M in Monero illicitly mined via MyKings to date SophosLabs’ report provides a full overview of the botnet’s operations, which Szappanos characterizes as a “relentlessly redundant [i.e. repetitive] attacker” that attacks mostly Windows-based services that hosts database management systems such as MqSQL and MS-SQL, network protocols such as Telnet, and even servers running CCTV camera storage. The report notes that the botnet’s creators appear to prefer to use open source or other public domain software and are…Dec 20, 2019
In early-March Bitcoin incurred some of the roughest price action it has ever seen, with the benchmark cryptocurrency finding itself caught within a capitulatory decline that led it from over $8,000 to lows of $3,800. This meltdown occurred concurrently with the global equities market seeing a massive selloff as investors began growing aware of just how serious the Coronavirus pandemic was. In the time since this occurred, however, Bitcoin has been caught within a steady uptrend that has allowed its price to nearly double from these lows, leading one analyst to call it the “most resilient asset in the world.” These Characteristics of Bitcoin’s Ongoing Rebound are What Makes it so Resilient The investment world has been captivated by the recent selloff seen in the oil market, with the commodity’s May futures expiry leading its price to decline into negative territory for the first time in decades. This subsequently led the price of spot oil to similarly plunge, creating shockwaves that have gravely impacted companies and countries that are oil-reliant from a revenue perspective. Some spot oil exchange traded funds…Apr 22, 2020
Tron described its recent listing on Ledger wallet’s Ledger Live software as a move for both parties to continue the expansion of the crypto space. “It was in our mutual interest, to further develop and promote the crypto ecosystem,” a Tron representative told Cointelegraph. “The rapid growth in the crypto and blockchain space is evident and the users demand more functions and creative solutions to advance the security, usability, and all-in-one stop.” The addition gives users more options Tron recently saw its proof-of-stake TRX coin added to Ledger Live, the desktop software for hardware wallet provider, Ledger, on April 16. The move also offers users staking capabilities within Ledger Live. Though Ledger hardware wallets previously hosted TRX compatibility and staking features, users had to work with third-party software to access them, the representative said. “Any third-party wallet can store TRX with the Ledger’s public SDK to the Ledger hardware wallet,” the rep added, mentioning TRONscan as an example. “This collaboration further improves the user experience and provide more options to users in the crypto space,” the rep added of…Apr 18, 2020
Following yet another extended period of sideways trading within the lower-$7,000 region for the latter part of the week, Bitcoin was able to incur some further momentum overnight that led it to highs of $7,300. This ongoing upswing marks bulls attempt to push the benchmark cryptocurrency past multiple key resistance levels that were previously hampering its growth, with the next overhead resistance existing at $7,400. One analyst is noting, however, that BTC may not be able to surmount these levels in the near-term, primarily due to a notable amount of large sell orders popping up on Coinbase – potentially placing some drag on the crypto that leads it lower. Bitcoin Bulls Target Movement to Key Resistance After Breaking Above $7,200 At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading up just over 2% at its current price of $7,220, which is around the level at which the cryptocurrency was previously facing significant resistance. As BTC ranged sideways throughout most of Thursday and Friday, bulls attempted to push past this level on multiple occasions, with each one being met with significant selling…Apr 19, 2020
Ethereum-based company Consensys has cut hundreds of jobs since January. In its latest action, the US-based blockchain development team confirmed it will slash more than 90 jobs – or 14% of its workforce – citing the global impact of Covid-19. The decision comes after a virtual town hall meeting on April 20, reports say. The number of employees sacked at Consensys this year now runs into a few hundred, following another round of dismissals in February. Then, 14% of the staff were sent home. In a statement, Consensys said it is rebalancing its priorities and re-evaluating timelines in light of the uncertainty brought into the market by the pandemic. “In such an environment, we must make changes to conserve resources and ensure our continued ability to support our customers, drive innovation, and serve the broader ecosystem,” the Joseph Lubin-led company said. The firm, whose global team features software developers, security experts, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and others, will provide dismissed employees with two months of severance pay and career transition services. Continued the statement: All key operational aspects of the business are…Apr 22, 2020
Cryptocurrencies and their value can be determined from the fact that they, unlike the first monetary assets, weren’t created out of need but ended up being one. Belgium’s Blockchain Project Databroker Signs Up European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) To List COVID-19 Data
The COVID-19 crisis has shown even a greater need for reliable and open data that is verified by the blockchain and smart contracts and Belgium’s Blockchain Project Databroker has stepped and announced they are collaborating with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) to bring extensive data on the geographic distribution of COVID-19 cases worldwide to their Databroker marketplace. The extensive, verified data allows for deeper assessment and analysis of emerging threats to human health from COVID-19 and includes supportive suggestions and material for building up new intelligence methods or improving already existing capacities. It is open for public access and offers a free trial for a month. “It’s big progress we’ve made in a relatively short period of time – delivering the peer-to-peer platform we need to allow data sharing and data monetization,” stated Matthew van Niekerk, Databroker’s CEO. Since the beginning of the global pandemic, ECDC’s Epidemic Intelligence team has been collecting the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths, based on reports from health authorities worldwide. This comprehensive and systematic process is carried out on a…May 6, 2020
The talk of the crypto industry over the last few weeks has been focused on the massive gains from many altcoins across the top ten cryptocurrencies by market cap, however, few assets were buzzing as much as Ethereum and Tezos. The two altcoins are up well over 100% year-to-date, however, both have just flashed a very dangerous sell signal that could cause a steep correction and these two top performing crypto assets to retrace much of their recent parabolic bull rallies. Are These Top Performing Altcoins Part of a Greater Crypto Correction? The number two cryptocurrency by market cap, Ethereum, and relative newcomer to the crypto market top ten, Tezos, have had an explosive first two months of the new calendar year. Ethereum was up well over 125% year-to-date from trough to peak before the recent correction took the second-largest cryptocurrency down a few notches. Meanwhile, during January and February, Tezos had already quadrupled in value, with over 200% returns from the 2020 low to the recent high.
