South Africa’s Central Bank Addresses Illicit Money Transfers in Bitcoin » The Merkle Hash
Governments around the globe are trying to regulate cryptocurrencies to the best of their abilities. Particularly where criminal use cases of Bitcoin are concerned, some new rules need to be introduced.
The South African central bank is currently working on a way to prevent the evasion of currency controls.
Another Central Bank Focusing on Bitcoin
According to the Reserve Bank of South Africa, cryptocurrencies are used on a “regular basis” for this type of purpose.
This news isn’t entirely surprising, as other banks in the country have begun to clamp down on cryptocurrencies as well.
There is currently no plan to ban the use of digital money in the country.
However, introducing a new law could help legitimize the industry even further.
The new proposal is expected to go into effect as of March 2020.
As part of the proposal, the central bank will continue to limit the amount of money to be moved out of South Africa.
Although most citizens never move over 1 million rand to other countries, it is an important first step regardless.
For those who do not wish to declare their transfers to the Revenue Service, cryptocurrencies are considered to be an alternative.
It is that train of thought that the central bank wants to eradicate altogether.
How all of this will play out in the real world, is difficult to predict.
Proposals often look good on paper, but prove difficult to enforce in the real world.

While the size of Bitcoin’s community has been shrinking over the past few months, one part of the crypto industry has been consistently growing: the market capitalization of Tether’s USDT, the leading dollar stablecoin. The cryptocurrency, now the fourth-largest by market capitalization, has been responding to an increase in demand over the past few weeks, with Twitter account Whale Alert tracking a series of transactions indicating USDT is in high demand. Just today, on April 18th, it was reported that yet another $120 million worth of the stablecoin was minted. That, analysts say, could be big for Bitcoin and the rest of the crypto market moving forward. Tether’s Market Cap Hits $7 Billion; Bitcoin Stands to Benefit According to data from crypto analytics tracker Skew.com, the amount of USDT in circulation recently passed seven billion, or approximately 3.4% of the entire crypto market’s market capitalization per CoinMarketCap. This comes after a series of $120 million prints, like the one mentioned above. Analysts believe this trend to be positive for the cryptocurrency market, and may actually explain much of Bitcoin’s recovery from…Apr 19, 2020

King released the Crash Bandicoot-branded endless runner we’ve all been dreading. The genre has tarnished yet another beloved franchise. Here’s hoping this won’t represent the future of Crash. Crash Bandicoot Mobile is live on Android, marking yet another franchise tarnished by the “endless runner” genre. What happened to Sonic and Rayman is rapidly happening with Crash. One of our favorite franchises is being squeezed for cash in a lazy Temple Run clone. ‘Crash Mobile’ Ruins our Favorite Bandicoot This game accomplishes an ambitious feat. It takes the aesthetic of Crash and ruins everything you love about it. Players have the genre’s typical three lanes to switch between, obstacles to avoid, and collectibles to find. There’s only one thing that makes it different from every other endless runner in the Google Play Store: There’s a bandicoot skin over everything. That makes it okay in the eyes of Activision, I guess. Crash Bandicoot Mobile is only on Android for the moment, and the Google Play page details exactly how it’s ruining the nostalgia held towards your once-favorite marsupial. A new kind of…Apr 22, 2020
Today has been a bloodbath for Ethereum (ETH) and the aggregated cryptocurrency market, with Bitcoin’s overnight drop below $7,700 catalyzing a massive selloff that has led virtually all digital assets to plummet 20% or more. Ethereum is now nearing a critical support level that bulls must defend if they want to guard against further losses, as a break below this single level could prove to be devastating for the cryptocurrency. This dire price action has come about as the ETH network faces massive congestion, leading its median gas price to skyrocket. Ethereum Faces Intense Selloff as Network Incurs Massive Congestion At the time of writing, Ethereum is trading down over 26% at its current price of $138, which marks a significant decline from daily highs of nearly $200 that were set yesterday when bulls attempted to recapture its position above this level. The massive selloff that occurred overnight first began when Bitcoin posted a decisive break below $7,700, with all of its buying support dissolving as it began descending to lows of $5,200. The support BTC found at this level…Mar 13, 2020
The Dow Jones struggled on Tuesday following a breakneck rally to start the week. Bullish momentum on Wall Street appears to have stalled. ABN AMRO believes the risk of a coronavirus outbreak setback remains high as many states reopen for business. The Dow Jones struggled on Tuesday, and even high-profile testimony from Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell failed to give the stock market meaningful support. There’s a strange mixture of fear and optimism on Wall Street. Coronavirus data appears to be moving in the right direction, but as the pandemic surpasses weighty milestones – 1.5 million cases in the U.S. and nearly 5 million worldwide – it’s prompting some reflection about the extent of the damage. The decentralized liquidity network Bancor announced its upcoming airdrop, which will start on New Year’s Eve. In a Nov. 27 press release shared with Cointelegraph, the decentralized exchange platform announced the official launch of its New Year’s Eve airdrop, which will give away its ETHBNT liquidity pool tokens to 60,000 people. Liquidity pools allow members to add liquidity to a decentralized exchange (DEX) and receive a portion of the exchange’s trading fees in return. Making DEXs more liquid is purportedly crucial in ensuring that they can compete with centralized exchanges. Users will be able to either hold the token and start receiving fees from each Ether (ETH)-based trade on Bancor, or they can trade it for any other token on Bancor, including ETH, EOS and Dai (DAI). Increase liquidity and DeFi users A Bancor spokesperson said that the point of the airdrop is to improve DEX liquidity and significantly expand the use of decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. They claimed that the airdrop would increase the number of DeFi app users by 500%: “There are probably about ~10K total users of…Nov 28, 2019

The web instilled in us the hope of replacing the old social hierarchy with a network of networks. Yet important gaps in the structure of the internet, its lack of provisioning for trust and identity across social distance, left a vacuum that was filled by a small group of powerful platforms. These days many believe we are doomed to a continuous societal decline into surveillance capitalism and political division. Decentralized, rules-based databases like as blockchains offer us the hope of overcoming some of the limitations of the early internet systems that could enable the original promise to be more fully realized. However, early experiments with cryptocurrencies have been, among other things, wasteful, subject to speculative bubbles, or taken over by ideological factions…Dec 23, 2019
Bithumb, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, could invest more than $8 million into South Korea’s regulatory sandbox. Via its daughter company GCX Alliance, Bithumb has shown intent to put 10 billion won ($8 million) into South Korea’s “regulatory free zone” in Busan, according to reporting from Seoul on Jan. 9. Regulation-free zone South Korea’s second-largest city, Busan, has been the subject of prior headlines for its status as a deregulated outpost and for its desire to create a digital currency based on blockchain technology, as Cointelegraph reported in July 2019. In December 2019, KT, South Korea’s most sizable telecom company, announced the introduction of a blockchain-based currency local to Busan. Fund usage Bithumb has shown interest in putting the 10 billion won toward the Tongsan Asset Exchange, located in Busan, as indicated by Korea’s Ministry of Small and Medium Venture Businesses, the Korean news article said. South Korea’s Financial Services Commission plans to review the endeavor with Bithumb near January’s end. The article added: “The industry expects Bithumb to launch various blockchain-based financial businesses in Busan with this…Jan 9, 2020
Markelle Fultz was once the NBA’s biggest bust. After being traded last season, he’s now the Magic’s starting point guard. Even if his jumper never comes around, Fultz has already proven worthy of Orlando’s confidence. Eyebrows across the NBA raised in September when the Orlando Magic picked up the option on Markelle Fultz’s rookie contract. In a vacuum, retaining a player who just two years ago was good enough to be the No. 1 pick would be a no-brainer. But not only had Fultz failed to prove he was worth a $12.3 million fourth-year salary, the strange circumstances surrounding his shoulder injury made it fair to wonder if he would ever even develop into a viable NBA rotation player. Not three months later, it’s become clear that the Magic knew something the rest of the basketball world didn’t. Fultz may not ever be the superstar he was once destined to become but has already taken the reins as Orlando’s point guard in the early going of his first full NBA season. A Complete Unknown Most preseason forecasts for the Magic…Dec 3, 2019
In less than two weeks, the Bitcoin network produced three blocks that did not propagate. The mining anomaly did not create double-spends. Bitcoin Stale Blocks Accelerate on Peak Mining Activity Bitcoin (BTC) is designed with the possibility to discover two blocks at the same time, though this is a relatively rare event. But in the past couple of weeks, stale blocks have occurred in rapid succession. BitMex research counted three stale blocks in the past couple of weeks, with another stale block in January. Bitcoin had a stale block this morning at height 619,970: * 4 second time gap* First stale block since 2020-02-27* No double spends – The stale block contained 10 txns excluded from the competing block, which all made it into the next block (619,971)https://t.co/uzJXPLZduO pic.twitter.com/7Lr7tJFBto — BitMEX Research (@BitMEXResearch) March 3, 2020 Stale blocks look worrying in that they may be suggestive of a chain split. But since only one block was produced, it was more likely an anomaly. The Bitcoin network protocol will start to propagate the block that was discovered slightly earlier. The latest…Mar 3, 2020
