Trading volume records in bitcoin’s options market were smashed on Monday as investors scrambled to hedge their positions amid the sell-off. Major exchanges – Deribit, LedgerX, Bakkt, OKEx, CME – registered total trading volume of $198 million, surpassing the previous record high of $171.3 million reached on Feb. 11, according to crypto derivatives research firm Skew Markets. Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) traded $2.1 million, while Intercontinental Exchange’s (ICE’s) Bakkt did not trade any contracts. Bakkt last registered activity on Feb. 27 and prior to that on Feb. 12. An option contract is a derivative based on the value of an underlying instrument that gives the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell the specified amount of an underlying asset on or before the expiration date. A call option gives the holder a right to buy, while the put option gives the holder the right to sell. “Derivatives trading activity tends to…Mar 11, 2020

Ending the Year on a High Note OmiseGo, one of the many crypto success stories from the 2017 initial coin offering (ICO) period on December 27 announced that it had finally recorded its first-ever mainnet transaction after close to 34 months of development. OmiseGo’s Chief Technology Officer, Kasima Tharnpipitchai, stated in a blog post: “On Friday, we deployed an environment against mainnet and successfully performed a transaction lifecycle test (deposit, transact, start exit). This is the OMG Network’s first mainnet transaction!” Kasima added that for the past few weeks, the OMG team had been busy finishing up all the major audit recommendations. Notably, OmiseGo has removed all the code intended for transaction types that are yet to be defined. With this, the OmiseGo team will now be able to develop smart contracts with minimal complexity and maximum security. The blog post also mentions that with a significant improvement in OMG’s RLP handling capability, the…Dec 28, 2019
Coinbase partners with DustAid to facilitate Crypto Donations to the NSPCC and others this Christmas
By Zeeshan Feroz, CEO, Coinbase UK Creating an open financial system takes its shape in many different ways, and in turn benefits people differently, too. That’s why this December we’re partnering with DustAid to enable our customers to donate crypto to three brilliant charities this Christmas. DustAid is an organisation that facilitates crypto donations to projects across the world. This partnership will allow Coinbase users in the UK to donate crypto to these important causes: NSPCC, the UK’s leading children’s charity that seeks to keep young people safe from abuse; The Little Edi Foundation, which provides support and grants to struggling rural communities in Romania; Space for Giants, who work to protect and secure the future of elephants and their landscapes. DustAid will be using Coinbase Commerce — our platform that allows merchants to accept cryptocurrency payments in a fully decentralised way — to facilitate these donations. Louise Corden, NSPCC Lead Digital Producer, said: “Raising funds via cryptocurrency highlights how the NSPCC is continually exploring new ways to enable people to donate to the charity and contribute to our fight…Dec 17, 2019
The global trading director of a major precious metals firm is warning gold investors to not pay the currently enormous premiums until inflation sets in much later down the line. However, Bitcoin is booming for similar reasons as gold. Does this mean that Bitcoin‘s next bull run may be delayed until inflation truly takes hold? Kitco’s Peter Hug: Inflation Won’t Arrive in Short-Term, Gold Demand Isn’t There Yet To combat the devastation the pandemic has done to the economy, the Fed has been printing money at an unprecedented rate. Stimulus packages already reach in the trillions, and the Fed has pledged to do whatever is necessary to sustain what little positive momentum is left. During periods of economic downturn, gold serves as among investor’s first choice to park capital. The precious metal has earned safe-haven status as a result. Twitter Facebook reddit Pinterest Hacker News LinkedIn Tumblr Google+ VKontakte The U.S. Fed Chairman, Jerome Powell announces that it is preparing to buy unlimited amounts of U.S. bonds and mortgage-backed securities to prevent the economy from falling into depression. Hence, paving way for another $2 trillion worth economic stimuli. However, the stock market shows little strength after the announcement. The S&P 500 Index closed 2.9% lower at $2237; it records a new low since December 2016 at $2191. With the employment rates heading towards 30% mark and the world experiencing a lock-down due to the Coronavirus, the stimulus is backed by bleak prospects of revenue. Moreover, while the stimulus might seem necessary at the moment, it is also increasing hyper-inflationary risks. Paradigm Shift The current move by the US Feds is an illustration of the Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) which allows the countries like U.S., U.K., and Japan to print indefinite amounts of money without worrying about debt and inflation. Alex Kruger, a crypto analyst who spoke on the issue notes that, it considerably increases the inflationary risk. He added,…Mar 25, 2020

Dutch regulations are causing capital constraints among crypto startups, a crypto exchange is extending credit lines and Kentucky is looking to blockchain to manage its critical infrastructure. Last week, Bittr, a Dutch crypto exchange announced it would close shop citing the burden of complying with new anti-money laundering (AMLD5) regulations in the nation. This is likely the first of many such closures of cash-strapped companies that now have to meet a new definition of compliance. Under Dutch law, businesses pay for their own regulations out of pocket, and often incentive firms to keep lawyers on retainer, pay a compliance officer or find a third party to manage costs. Announced Friday, Bittr, the first of what could be many crypto exchanges to fold under these capital constraints, announced it would shut down. It has been an incredibly turbulent past couple of weeks for the global markets, with the US stock market seeing intense losses while Bitcoin (BTC) and the aggregated crypto market continue facing some intense downwards pressure. Although BTC has been closely correlated to the traditional markets over the past few days, it is important to keep in mind that this correlation appears to have broken today, as the major US stock market indices have bounced today while Bitcoin remains stuck below $9,000. The benchmark cryptocurrency’s recent price action has led one Gold bug and outspoken crypto critic to note that BTC is especially bearish due to its inability to pump with yesterday’s emergency 50 basis point rate cut from the Federal Reserve. Bitcoin Stagnates as US Stock Market Recoups Yesterday’s Losses It has been a rollercoaster of a week for the US stock market, with the benchmark indices incurring incredibly volatile price action. The week kicked off with an intense rally that led the Dow Jones to surge over 5%, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both climbing over 4%….Mar 4, 2020
Boris is finally facing Corbyn head to head in what you would have thought would have been quite an election campaign, but there’s no Macron singing to En March here, no Trump or Sanders preaching to the rallying quire, no posters or gratifies. In fact at Piccadilly Circus we’d be surprised if most didn’t say: election, what election? Thus Britain, the home of modern democracy, where the choice so stark you’d think, and yet many wonder if there is a choice at all. In venues across the country, even in those of artists where they sing to each other for their own pleasure, the name of Boris or Corbyn is unmentionable. The mood is sombre as revolts rage across the world. Here that revolt is not on the streets, but in the hair-style of the young, their punkness and sophistication, and in their songs. Boris vs Corbyn you’d think would be the great fight of the age. The aristocrat vs the commoner, the rich vs the champaign socialist, but as it happens neither inspires. Both risk being rejected. Skimming their…Nov 25, 2019

As information portal 99 Bitcoins confirmed on Thursday, since 2009, Bitcoin has only been unprofitable to buy on 434 days — at price peaks. This equates to 89.16% profitability, allowing BTC to put pay to gold’s record despite the precious metal’s own recent advances in U.S. dollar terms. Year-on-year, Bitcoin returns have been similarly impressive. At…Dec 20, 2019
