Coinbase Wallet may Soon Remove the dApp Browsing Feature

Coinbase cryptocurrency exchange is contemplating the removal of the decentralized applications (dApps) browsing feature on its mobile cryptocurrency wallet, Coinbase Wallet. The San Francisco-based company’s move is in a bid to comply with Apple’s App Store policy, according to a Finance Magnates reports, December 30, 2019.

Coinbase Wallet Removes dApp Browser

Per the report, Coinbase is seriously considering taking down the dApps browsing feature on Coinbase Wallet in a bid to comply with stringent Apple App Store’s policy regarding decentralized applications (dApps).

Reportedly, the decision has not yet been finalized, however, Brian Armstrong, Coinbase’s CEO has confirmed that there is a possibility for the feature to be taken down.

Coinbase’s CEO also noted that the app’s removal would be unfortunate to see, whilst also noting that Apple may be bent on removing dApps from its App store.

“If Apple customers want to be able to use Dapps, we may need to make this request known to Apple in some way,”

He added:

“This is an important area of innovation in finance, and many developers and early adopters of this technology have millions of dollars worth of crypto tied up in these financial applications, which they will no longer be able to use on Apple mobile devices if this app store policy continues,”

Alternative Means of Accessing dApps via Coinbase Wallet

Even if the dApp browser feature is removed from the App store, users will continue to enjoy their favorite dApps on a vast array of browsers through the WalletLink feature on Coinbase Wallet which was rolled out recently, or via desktop.

It is, worth noting that the dApp browser on Coinbase Wallet is not the first dApp to be threatened with removal.

Search engine giant Google, for instance, removed MetaMask, a dApp browser extension from its Android PlayStore and the Chrome Extension store, without citing any reasons.

Similarly, Apple rejected an update to the Trust Wallet, a Binance-owned mobile wallet stating that the dApp is a point of concern, adding that the dApp would only be updated if links pointing to it are removed.

Despite these draconian policies, Apple has made it clear that its carefully studying the cryptospace and could join the movement when the time is right.

“We are watching cryptocurrency. we think it has interesting long-term potential,” declared Jennifer Bailey, vice president of Apple Pay.
